Woolworths Southern Transport Fleet has recently commenced full scale trials of biodiesel B20 as its fuel of choice due to the environmental benefits of using this type of fuel. The biodiesel B20 being used is made entirely from waste products such as tallow and used cooking oil. Around 100 trucks and about twice as many refrigerated trailers are involved in the trial. This follows an initial trial which ensured that there was no negative impact on equipment. Woolworths also fitted data loggers to trucks to gain a greater understanding of any fuel consumption and truck performance differentials between diesel and biodiesel.

Working in conjunction with EcoStation, Woolworths is using the Fleet Assessment Tool to enable a comparison of fuel consumption and environmental performance between diesel and biodiesel. Results and outcomes should be known over the next 3 to 6 months.
