Background
EPA-VTA Sustainability Covenant
EPA Victoria and the Victorian Transport Association are working in partnership with companies in the EcoStation program to maximise efficiencies and reduce emissions. The partnership was established through a Sustainability Covenant - a voluntary agreement between the parties to explore creative ways to reduce environmental impact and increase resource efficiency.

EcoStation was inspired by the US EPA SmartWay Transport program, involving over 1,900 US companies, including all of the top 100 for-hire carriers. Using a similar model to SmartWay, EcoStation will support companies that commit to reducing the impact of their freight operations. It will build upon everything that has been learned though the SmartWay program, becoming the new benchmark for the Australian freight industry.

EcoStation Pilot Program
To ensure we create a program that is optimised for the Australian freight industry, we launched an EcoStation pilot program in September 2009 in Victoria. The pilot involved 27 foundation partners who worked with us to fine-tune the program.
There were three key objectives for the pilot program:
- To identify the key tools and services required to implement and quantify fuel efficiency measures suitable for the Victorian freight industry
- To test the EcoStation freight partnership process and options for a cost-effective and efficient service
- To identify and select key environmental performance and recognition indicators that are relevant to both freight customers and operators.
